My Approach
Person-Centred, Relational, and Trauma-Focused
My therapeutic approach is best described as Person-Centred, relational and trauma focused. I include body-based somatic skills to help manage stress responses, with an aim to increase your somatic awareness so you are better able to regain and maintain a state of calm and regulation. I support the view that the slower we go, the faster we get there, and that small steps are big wins particularly when new adaptive actions replace old maladaptive ones.
Humanistic Values and Collaborative Attitude
Guided by humanistic values, I hold that for change to be meaningful, it must originate from the client, and that the collaborative and relational nature of our work together is the foundational premise for this. Therapy will therefore not involve giving advice or directing you to take any course of action that you have not requested or consented to.
A Safe and Confidential Space
In our sessions I place emphasis on the qualities of a restorative relationship and aim to provide a space where you can be entirely yourself to explore any emotional difficulties without judgement, where you have the potential to grow within a therapeutic relationship characterized by safety, trust and confidentiality, and where therapy, given the right conditions, can help to identify, accept, reframe and change the unsettled areas in life. It is a space where you are at the centre, in a process of re-organising, clarifying or clearing an issue, where you can consider your choices or perhaps decide on some new ways of living.
Holistic Understanding of Formative Influences
Working holistically rather than pathologically, I believe that we are influenced and adaptive to our diverse environments and the contexts we grow up in. This means that our close relationships, formative experiences and surroundings all contribute to shaping who we are and how we might perceive, react and approach different aspects of our lives. Whilst I work with a variety of issues, I am particularly interested in clients who may be struggling with adverse childhood experiences, traumatic early and/or formative relationships and/or more recent stressful events that are affecting the quality of their relationships, work-life, choices and goals.
